My primary professional organization is the
American Statistical Association. It is the largest professional organization of statisticians in the world. It is headquartered at 732 N. Washington Street in Alexandria, Virginia. I have been a member for more than 35 years, have served on/in a variety of its sub-organizations (boards, sections, committees, etc.), have held a variety of offices within those groups, and have received some nice honors for that work. Foremost among these was being named a Fellow of the association in 1995 and the recipient of a Founder's Award in 2006. I have attended the ASA's Joint Statistical Meetings (the big international meetings) every year for a number of years. On the attached page are some snapshots from activities at some of those meetings. Each year, one of the highlights of the meetings is a dinner where all with K-State ties are invited to get together. We have a lot of fun at those gatherings, and a couple of pictures of them are included. |
Within the state of Kansas, in addition to my academic duties as a professor, I have served for a number of years on the Technical Advisory Committee to the state's Department of Revenue Ratio Study team. This group gives technical advice to that portion of the Department of Revenue charged with overseeing and helping county assessors in their task of providing property tax assessments that are fair to all taxpayers and property owners. In this case, "fair" means that the assessed value assigned to a property reflects the market value that property would fetch in an open market. Over the years we have encountered a number of interesting statistical issues involved with the assessment process.
